Exporting a DaVinci Resolve timeline for color grading.

How to export a clean final timeline with trimmed original camera files, a reference video, and everything needed for a smooth grading session.

5 steps DaVinci Resolve Media Management

Before export

Prepare the timeline.

The exported timeline should contain only the picture elements that are part of the final creative edit.

  • Remove unused clips and keep the timeline clear.
  • Keep most video clips on V1. Place graphics, VFX compositions, and similar elements on V2.
  • Remove the original audio sources. If available, place the final audio mix on A1.
  • Check transforms, transitions, cuts, and every other timeline element against the intended creative edit.

Media Management

Export with media.

From DaVinci Resolve's top menu on macOS or Windows, choose File → Media Management…. Open the Timelines tab, select Copy, and choose the export destination.

Use these copy settings.

  1. 01

    Select only the timeline you want to export. The checkbox should be visible next to that timeline only.

  2. 02

    Choose Used media and trim keeping 25 frame handles. Increase the handles only when the project needs more room around each edit.

    Enable Use project name subfolder so Resolve creates a clearly named package.

  4. 04

    Enable Preserve hierarchy after 0 folder levels to retain the original folder structure.

After export

Check the package.

When Media Management finishes, open the selected destination. You should see the exported .drt timeline file together with the folder containing the copied camera media.

As a final check, import the .drt file into a new, empty Resolve project and confirm that the timeline opens, the media relinks, and the edit plays correctly.

Reference

Add a preview.

Add a rendered reference video with sound to the exported folder. A lightweight H.264 or H.265 file is enough - it will be used only to verify that the timeline arrived correctly.

Recommended overlays

Timeline timecode
Helps compare exact frames and report any timing or sync differences.
Source clip names
Makes it easier to identify and relink a shot if anything is missing.

Arrange the transfer.

Once the package is complete, note the total folder size and get in touch. We will agree on the best way to transfer the files.
